From Wool to Waulking with Anastatia Spicer

  • Glen Foerd 5001 Grant Avenue Philadelphia, PA, 19114 United States (map)

Just over 100 years ago, Pennsylvania was home to more than one million sheep, and Philadelphia buzzed with hundreds of wool textile manufacturers. Both sheep breeding and the production of wool textiles have profoundly shaped our local landscape; however, we rarely have the chance to appreciate these once-thriving industries.

Join local weaver and textile industry historian, Anastatia Spicer, for a hands-on workshop about how raw wool is processed into finished cloth. Try your hand at carding wool and feel how the raw material transforms into spun yarn and ultimately to woven cloth. The workshop will conclude with a short waulking— a traditional method of processing wool cloth that involves communal song.

This workshop will be held outdoors and is appropriate for adults and children ages 12+. $10 is the fee for this event, but if you’re able, select a higher ticket price, this helps us ensure our programs stay free and low-cost. Please reach out to Colleen at cwinslow@glenfoerd.org with any questions you may have.
