Come learn the basics of kayaking with our environmental educators, Rob and Colleen! We will talk about the different types of kayaks, parts of the boat and paddle, common strokes (forward, reverse, and sweeps), and basic on-water safety.
The workshop will start with a discussion on land and then transition onto the Poquessing Creek, where you will be able to practice skills, ask questions, and get pointers from staff. Participants should expect to leave the workshop feeling more confident in their kayaking abilities!
This workshop is appropriate for participants ages 12+ who have never kayaked before and for those with limited kayak experience who would like to work on basic techniques. All participants will take solo kayaks out onto the water. Glen Foerd will provide boats, paddles, and PFDs.
FYI: Be prepared for summer temperatures and moderate physical exertion. Getting in and out of your boat can be a wet and muddy experience, so wear appropriate clothing and consider bringing something to change into after the activity. Don’t forget your water, snacks, and sunscreen!
The meeting point for this event will be behind the Carriage House, which is a short walk down the drive from the public parking lot.
Events can be canceled on short notice due to weather and river conditions. In this case, your ticket fee will be refunded. Please keep an eye on your email for messages about cancellation.
