The marble chimney cap on top of the chimney, which serves the fireplaces in the dining
room, furnace, and recently renovated art gallery, was in a very poor condition. Flue gases, which emanated from the flue, contributed toward the deterioration process. The material itself suffered from extreme weathering due to heavy winds and driving rains,
which frequently come off of the Delaware River during storms.
The chimney cap was structurally unstable as well. Settlement of the heavy, pedimented east and west ends of the cap had caused these elements to slip out of position and lean outwardly. Consequently, open joints and cracks allowed for the penetration of water. Further deterioration occurred, creating an imminent danger to the skylight and the elaborate leaded stained glass ceiling in the art gallery. |
| The chimney was repaired by means of replacing the missing divider and resetting the marble pediment. The marble was cleaned, repaired, and repointed. The main portion of the chimney was stripped and scraped of all non-breathing paint and Keim was applied. New plaster was used only where necessary. |
